چکیده
In a preceding report of ours1 we demonstrated an impaired intestinal absorp tion of 57CoB12 in vitamin B2 deficient rats and that this impairment of 57CoB12 absorption might be due to a deficiency of intrinsic factor caused by vitamin B2 deficiency. In 1963 Hsu2 made a detailed investigation upon intestinal absorption of 60CoB12 in rats with deficiency of other vitamins than vitamin B12 and concluded that the absorption of 60CoB12 was impaired only in pyridoxine deficiency, but not in deficiency of thiamine, riboflavin, panthothenic acid, biotin or choline. The purpose of the present investigation is to demonstrate again that an impaired intestinal absorption of 57CoB12 was surely resulted from vitamin B2 deficiency in rats. Furthermore, a decrease in 57CoB12 binding capacity of the homogenzied gastric mucosa of the B2 -deficient rats is also confirmed again, and atrophy and a decrease in number of gastric chief cells of the vitamin B2 deficient rats are demonstrated histologically.

Application of Riboflavin-Deficient Rat Erythrocytes in the in Vitro Assay of Faba Bean Toxicity
Background: Faba bean toxicity (favism) is a common condition observed in our region. Objective: To develop a short and simple technique involving the use of riboflavin-deficient rats to test in vivo faba bean toxicity. Methods/Results: Sprague Dawley rats were maintained on a riboflavin-deficient diet and their vitamin B2 status was monitored by the assay of erythrocyte glutathione reductase (...

متن کاملP-181: Protective Role of Vitamin E As An Alternative Treatment for Ovariectomized Osteoporotic Rats
Background: Osteoporosis one of the postmenopausal symptoms is characterized by bone loss. There is a link between excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation, estrogen deficiency due to cessation of ovarian function and bone loss. Free radicals are responsible for causing osteoblast apoptosis and reducing osteoblastogenesis in bone remodeling. Vitamin E is a potent antioxidant with the a...
متن کاملEffects of Vitamin B12 in Neonates and Young Infants
Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is an essential coenzyme for nucleic acid synthesis. Animal protein is the major dietary source of vitamin B12. Deficiency of vitamin B12 leads to megaloblastic anemia, degeneration of the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and abnormalities of epithelial tissues. Two factors are necessary for the cure of megaloblastic anemia: one in food (extrinsic factor) and one i...
